Military Brother of the Month (June 2023)

Brother Mareco Thomas (Hopkinsville/Fort Campbell (KY) Alumni Chapter) currently serves as an Advisor for the Theta Beta undergraduate chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and the Chair of the Theta Beta Alumni Association. He participates in various civic service projects within the community and is a mentor of high school students and aspiring military candidates. As a mentor, he provides leadership, intervention, reclamation, advice, companionship, and assistance in seeking employment and/or enrolling in college, vocational school, or military training post course completion. He also serves as the president of the government organizational Employee Association program.

Brother Thomas began his Veterans Health Administration (VHA) government career as a Pathways Intern at the Fayetteville, NC VA Coastal Health Care System. He currently serves as the Associate Deputy Network Director for the VA Mid-South Healthcare Network (VISN 9) based out of Nashville, TN.

Brother Thomas earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and History from Austin Peay State University, and a master’s degree, in Business Administration and Healthcare Management from Fayetteville State University. He is also a graduate of the VHA Leadership Development Institute and current participant of the 2023 Leadership VA cohort.

Brother Thomas enlisted into the U.S Army in 2002 as a Reservist. He was commissioned in 2006 as a 2nd Lieutenant through the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program at Austin Peay State University as a Medical Service Corps officer. He served in many capacities during his near 20 years of combined Active and Reserve service. During his military career, Brother Thomas was stationed in several duty locations to include the Republic of Korea (Camp Casey), Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and was deployed 5 times (Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom). His military education includes the Army Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC), the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Basic and Advanced Courses, U.S. Army Supply and Logistics Advance Individual Training (AIT) course, Ranger School, Jumpmaster School, Airborne School, and the Sabalauski Air Assault School.

He received several military awards and decorations to include; Bronze Star Medal (2OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (DMSM), Meritorious Service Medal (1OLC), Army Commendation Medal (2OLC), Army Achievement Medal (3OLC), National Defense Medal, Army Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Korean Defense Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Ribbon, Air Assault Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Combat Medical Badge, and the Ranger Tab.
